Nothing New - Why Do You See a Coach?

A reader asked me this question after I published the last Nothing New.

She thought it was odd for me to pay someone to do what I am trained for.

Interesting.

And I get that thinking.

I also have questions for you to consider. Do doctors and dentists treat themselves? Don’t teachers keep taking classes? I know how much more beautiful life’s journey can be with a coach supporting me.

I’ve been seeing my spiritual coach* monthly for about 24 years. I wouldn’t be who I am today without her. She does for me what I do for my clients: listens to me, asks me powerful questions, and holds me accountable. She helps me set goals, improve my self-awareness, and boosts my confidence. She has supported my journey since I was a mom to a 2- and 4-year-old to the present when I’m navigating caregiving for aging moms and parenting adult children. She helped me navigate some extremely painful seasons. She has said things that challenged me and offered opportunities in a nonjudgemental space.

I look forward to our monthly sessions. I prepare for them by reading my past month’s journal entries and reflecting on my life in the past month. Sometimes I have something specific to talk about, sometimes I just need to vent or cry. She is a safe space; honest, realistic, and caring.

We all know how beautiful and difficult life can be. This coaching relationship developed over the past decades has blessed my life. I’ll never know all the ripple effects, but I do know it helps me be my best in all the roles I fulfill in this life.

It’s worth every penny!

*Technically she is certified as a Spiritual Director, but I don’t like the term “director.” That makes it sound like she tells me how to live my life. She doesn’t. No one can do that but me.
